Police say Driver Fell Asleep Before Striking Utility Pole on Thain Road

December 17, 2024

(LEWISTON) – Lewiston Police and the Lewiston Fire Department were dispatched to the area of 514 Thain Road for a vehicle verses utility pole collision on Monday evening.

According to police, a 51-year-old man from Lewiston was driving South on Thain Road at around 6:17 p.m. when he fell asleep. His vehicle, a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe, crossed the northbound lanes of traffic making contact with a large utility pole near the intersection of Thain and Cedar Ave.

The contact with the pole caused it to break off and fall into the lanes of travel on Thain Road.

Airbags did deploy and the driver was uninjured. It was determined alcohol was not a factor in this crash. The driver was cited for inattentive driving.

Power was lost for a short time to around 300 Avista customers.  Avista crews responded to address the down power lines and replace the power pole. Thain Road was closed from Burrell Ave. to Grelle Ave. in both directions. Cedar Ave was also closed from 12th Street to 13th Street in both directions during the repairs.
