Structure Fire at 1739 Grelle Avenue in Lewiston

Lewiston Fire Department

LEWISTON – The Lewiston Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 18th Street and Grelle Avenue at 9:13 A.M. First arriving crews found the residence at 1739 Grelle Avenue with smoke coming from the front door and rear of the building.

Homeowners stated everyone was out of the home and that the fire was on the back deck. Fire crews were able to make an access and quickly extinguish the fire on the back deck. Crews checked for extension into the home with only minor damage found.

Crews remained on the scene for approximately thirty minutes to monitor the area and evacuate smoke from the residence.

The cause of the fire was determined to be an overloaded electrical cord supplying power to a heater in a chicken coop on the back deck. The failure of the cord leads the wooden coop to catch fire, endangering the home. Avista Utilities responded and secured power to the structure due to the electrical system failure. The estimated damage loss is approximately $5,000.

There were no citizen or firefighter injuries to report.

The department responded with 3 structural engines, 1 ambulance, 1 rescue truck, 1 fire investigator and 1 chief
officer, totaling 13 personnel.
