The Idaho Foodbank and Idaho’s Beef Community Work Together to Address Food Insecurity

MERIDIAN – July is Beef Month in Idaho. According to the Idaho Beef Council, there is 2.5 million head of cattle and calves in the state of Idaho – exceeding Idaho’s population of 1.8 million people. The Idaho Foodbank is pleased to partner with this important industry to bring food security to all Idahoans.

Beef Counts, which began in 2010, is a program designed to provide a consistent supply of high-quality protein throughout the year to The Idaho Foodbank. This is done with both cash and cattle contributions made by the beef industry in Idaho. We are grateful to the Idaho Beef Council, Agri Beef, and all the organizations, businesses, and families in Idaho’s beef community for their continued support of our mission.

Earlier this month, team members from True West Beef in the Magic Valley took some time to volunteer at a food distribution. True West Beef is a new beef processing plant being built in Jerome in collaboration with Agri Beef and livestock producers from around the west. They were able to help pack and distribute boxes of food to those living in the Magic Valley who are struggling to make ends meet. In addition to providing some staple food items and fresh produce, ground beef provided by the Beef Counts program was also part of the food distribution.

“Through the Beef Counts program and volunteer support in their communities, Idaho’s beef industry plays a valuable role in our work to address food insecurity,” said Karen Vauk, President and CEO of The Idaho Foodbank. “We appreciate their ongoing support of The Idaho Foodbank and the significant role they play in helping Idahoans struggling to make ends meet.”

Beef is an excellent source of iron and protein, and it is a food that is desired by many of the people served by The Idaho Foodbank. Idaho’s beef community is joined by other food producers and companies across Idaho in their year-round support of providing critical nutrition to Idahoans who are experiencing hunger.
