COLFAX – On Sunday evening, deputies from the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a call at a home in Garfield, WA. During the investigation, deputies learned that one of the residents at the home had allegedly been robbed at gunpoint over what appeared to be a financial dispute over narcotics. Witnesses and others who were present during the robbery identified 35-year-old Gavriel Hernandez and 37-year-old Roy Valdez, both of Pullman, as the suspects in the incident.
According to several witnesses on scene, the suspects took numerous tools and other items of value while pointing the handgun at the victim. Based on the information provided, deputies believed the couple was traveling back to their residence in Pullman.
With the assistance of the Pullman Police Department, Hernandez and Valdez were stopped upon entering Pullman and were taken into custody without incident.
Deputies applied for and were granted a search warrant for the suspect’s vehicle to look for items related to the alleged crime. During the search of the vehicle, several hundred dollars of tools that were reported stolen were recovered as well as a .357 cal handgun.
Hernandez and Valdez were booked into the Whitman County Jail on charges of Robbery 1st Degree, Theft of a Firearm, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm. Both Hernandez and Valdez have lengthy criminal histories including convictions for property crimes and narcotics-related activities.
Hernandez and Valdez are expected to make their first appearance on Tuesday afternoon in Whitman County Superior Court.
