Update from Family of Injured Firefighter Justin Shaw

(Kamiah, ID) On Saturday, August 10, at approximately 9:00 p.m. PDT, U.S. Forest Service firefighter Justin Shaw was struck by a tree while engaged in initial attack operations on a new wildfire start on the Salmon River Ranger District. Justin was initially transported via Life Flight to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, Idaho, and then to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Washington. Justin has since been transported to Colorado, where he continues his recovery and rehabilitation efforts at Craig Hospital in Englewood.

The following updated information and words of gratitude have been provided by Justin’s parents, Joe and Dawn Shaw:

“Justin has spent the last 23 days at PAM Health Specialty Hospital of Denver. Justin received outstanding care from the medical staff and therapies at PAM. He is awake more, learning to walk, eat, and communicate – all part of recovering from his brain injury. Justin is working really hard each day, and his drive and determination leave his therapists with smiles after every session.”

“He has gained endurance and will now be able to really get to work on his rehabilitation at Craig Hospital, where he is now receiving care. Craig is a world-renowned hospital that exclusively specializes in neurorehabilitation and research for individuals with brain injury. Craig is home to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, proven treatment methods, and exceptional patient outcomes.”

“We are also truly grateful to the JW Memorial Foundation for being such a blessing to our family. Their financial support in helping us cover lost income has lifted a huge weight off our shoulders, and we can’t thank them enough for their kindness. We also want to express our deep appreciation to Robert Tyler, who has been an incredible source of support from the very beginning. With their generosity and guidance, we have been able to spend more time focusing on Justin’s recovery and less time worrying about finances.”

“Please continue to send prayers, supportive emails, and cards. Both Justin and his family really appreciate each and everyone who has helped them through this challenging time.”
