Warrior Tennis Earns ITA Academic Honors

TEMPE, Ariz. – A total of 18 LC State Tennis players were named Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athletes, and both the men’s and women’s teams earned All-Academic Team status, the ITA announced on Thursday.

“It is always amazing to see the student-athletes earn such high grades throughout the year,” Head Coach Kai Fong said. “The tennis programs are very blessed to have such a strong academic group.”

On the men’s side, 10 Warriors garnered ITA Scholar-Athlete accolades. William Bruchard capped his career with his third nod, while Cornelius Sia and Andy Wu each earned their second award. Cade Edwards, Austin Gomez, Austin Swing, Thomas Schaap, Itaru Kikuchi, Larry Magalasin and Daniel Tevez all garnered recognition for the first time. As a team, the men earned a 3.52 GPA.

Eight Warrior women were named ITA Scholar-Athletes, led by Kyla Collier’s third award. Alexis Maison and Emily Schelbert both brought home their second honors, while Lina Boylan, Catherine Khardina, Jamyang Chenzom Phuntsho, Beatriz Lambru and Maria Eduardo Santos da Silva each earned the award for the first time. As a team, the women averaged a 3.66 GPA.

“Kyla, William and Larry had to work extra hard as they had their senior projects to complete as well,” Fong explained. “Among the group, four men and four women attained a 4.0 GPA.”

The total number of Warriors to earn the honor grew by six from last season’s mark of 12.

To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, a student-athlete must have a grade point average of at least 3.5. To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above.
