Mastery-Based Learning Evaluation Update

SBE staff presented a brief background on the Mastery-based Learning Collaborative (MBLC). The Board received a status update and learned more about the role of the evaluation in supporting the broader goals of the MBLC project. Dr. Jilliam Joe from the Aurora Institute — the MBLC’s external evaluator — presented on the MBLC Evaluation Report (Cohort 1 – Year 3) as well as future evaluation plans.

Review of 2024 System Health Report

The Board reviewed a draft of its 2024 education system health report and provided feedback. Every two years the Board is required by law to review the performance of the public education system and make recommendations for improvement to the state Legislature and Governor.

Honoring Board Member Patty Wood For Her Service

Board Member Patty Wood was honored for her service to the Board on Thursday, October 17, with a blanketing ceremony — a Native American tradition introduced to the Board by Chair Bill Kallappa II, a member of the Makah Tribe.

A blanket ceremony is a Native American tradition. It can be used to show respect to someone who has made an important contribution to their community or to commemorate an important milestone in that person’s life.

Patty’s term expires on January 2025 and this was her last in-person meeting. Patty was elected to the State Board of Education in 2016 after serving over 13 years on her local School Board in Kelso. She represents Western WA – Region 4. She’s previously served as Chair of the SBE Legislative Committee and Equity Committee and three years on the Executive Committee.

Upcoming Board Meeting

The next meeting is scheduled for December 5 over Zoom.
