Congressional Candidate to Speak to Democrats in Clarkston

A candidate for the 5th District U.S. House of Representatives’ seat being vacated by Cathy McMorris Rodgers will speak to Asotin County Democrats at their next meeting at 7 p.m. on April 2, 2024, at Clarkston United Methodist Church.

Carmela Conroy of Spokane is one of three Democrats and at least five Republicans who have announced their intentions to run for the seat. Filing deadline for candidates is May 10.

Conroy is a 1990 graduate of the University of Washington School of Law. She was a deputy prosecutor in Spokane county for nearly four years and then served in the U.S. Department of State for 22 years, working in various roles focused at different times on Norway, South and Central Asia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Japan and New Zealand.

The 5th District is bordered by Canada in the north, Oregon in the south and Idaho on the east and encompasses the 10 counties of Spokane, Ferry, Stevens, Pend Oreille, Lincoln, Whitman, Walla Walla, Columbia, Garfield and Asotin, along with parts of Adams and Franklin counties.

The Asotin County Democrats meet the first Tuesday of each month. The April 2 meeting also will include discussions about participation at local community events, candidates who have requested endorsements, and development of a party platform that addresses local issues in Asotin County.
