Family Promise Seeks New Location for Day Shelter

December 18, 2024

(Moscow, ID)  ― Wellness programs offered by Gritman at the Jeff and Becky Martin Community Wellness Center have moved to a new location as the hospital looks to find new ways to promote these offerings in the community.

The change follows the planned closure of the pool facility at the Martin Wellness Center on Palouse River Drive in late January 2025. Aging infrastructure and continued maintenance problems require the closure.

The closure will impact about 85 patrons who have been referred by a Primary Care Provider to use the Ron & Janie Nirk Therapy Pool for Wellness Classes and exercise. Gritman is communicating with patrons of the pool about their options.

Family Promise of the Palouse has operated its Day Center out of the space since 2013. Family Promise administrators are seeking the community’s help in identifying a new Day Center space beginning in Spring 2025.

“We are grateful for Gritman’s generous support and understand the challenges that they face with the current facility,” Family Promise Board President Bruce Pitman said. “They have provided valuable space and have diligently addressed maintenance issues for token rent. Their partnership has helped Family Promise flourish, and many families achieve a more promising future.”

Gritman Medical Center took ownership of the Palouse River Drive building in 2007. It has been renovated and remodeled but continues to have long-term maintenance concerns. Deterioration of the building’s infrastructure, along with continued HVAC and other mechanical issues, prompted an August move of all non-swimming classes to 409 S. Jackson St. in Moscow.

Gritman remains committed to the long-term success of the Martin Wellness Center programs. Non-swimming classes, including Movement Matters and PE for PD, will continue as scheduled at 409 Jackson St.

“We are grateful to Family Promise for their partnership over the past 11 years,” Gritman President and CEO Kara Besst said. “We are excited about future opportunities for wellness classes at our Jackson Street building.”

The Martin Wellness Center is named in honor of former Gritman President and CEO Jeff Martin, whose leadership helped give rise to Gritman’s vibrant wellness programs. Gritman and its community-based Board of Directors are committed to working toward a long-term solution for the Wellness Center programs that honor Martin and his legacy.

Gritman will conduct a comprehensive facilities master plan in 2025 that will assess the Martin Wellness Center building and all properties in the Gritman System.
