Herring Notches First Triple-Double in LCSC History, Byrd Scores Career-High to Cap Weekend

Alisha Alexander, LCSC Assistant Athletic Director-Sports Information

(Lewiston, ID) Darian Herring completed the first triple-double in Lewis-Clark State College history, male or female, on Saturday to help No. 13 LC State Women’s Basketball roll past Corban University 94-48. She posted 16 points to go with a career-high 13 rebounds and 10 assists. Sitara Byrd also had a big night with a career-best 26 points.

“What a special night,” coach Caelyn Orlandi said. “A career-high and a triple-double. What Darian Herring is capable of is truly remarkable and my favorite part of that triple-double are those 10 assists. She had a fantastic weekend and then to add onto the night with Sitara Byrd’s career-high of 26 points – what a fantastic night for those two players. They both earned everything tonight and I am very proud of their efforts on the court and their dedication to always improve.”

The win improves the LC State record to 14-2 overall and 8-2 in Cascade Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Byrd and Ellie Sander put up the first two baskets of the contest for a quick 4-0 lead, and back-to-back tallies by Herring and Byrd had the advantage to 8-3 by 6:52. After foul shots by Corban, Sander sparked a run of eight with contributions from Mataya Green, Herring and Byrd to make it 16-5 at 2:30. A layup by Sander capped the first 10 minutes with LC State in front 18-7.

LC State added 29 points in the second frame with nine coming from Sander. A triple by Tatum Brager kickstarted an 11-point rally that included a pair of 3-pointers by Brager, one by Kendall Wallace and a layup by Byrd. The lead grew to 31-9 at 7:18. A 3 by Tessa Karlberg sent the LC State Warriors on a 14-point stretch with tallies by Herring and Sander. The LC defense recorded two blocks and three steals in the span that had the margin at 45-18 by 1:52. Foul shots by Green sent the hosting Warriors to the locker room with a 47-22 advantage at the break.

Byrd tallied 11 points in the third quarter and was part of an 18-2 stretch to start the frame. Saner tallied two points, Herring and Green each scored four and Byrd added eight in the run for a 65-24 cushion at 5:42. Free throws by Byrd, Sander and Lindsey Wilson brought the period to a close with a score of 73-35.

Wallace and Camden Barger each scored in the first minute of the final frame to keep the momentum with LC State. LC State scored the final 13 points of the contest with buckets by Byrd, Brager, Sander and Herring to end the 94-48 contest.

STAT RECAP

Herring’s impressive night featured career-highs in both rebounds (13) and assists (10). She surpassed the 100-block mark in her career with four on the night to go with four steals. She now has 103 blocks in her career which ranks fifth all-time at LC State. The sophomore has 49 so far this season.

Byrd led all scorers with 26 points on a 10-for-14 night from the field. She was 3-for-4 from 3-point range and added nine rebounds and four steals. Sander scored 21 points on a 9-for-14 night with six boards and five steals.

“Ellie Sander had a great weekend and tonight she ran the floor so hard. Transition baskets aren’t easy and she most definitely earns them,” Orlandi added.

The host Warriors shot 50.7% from the field and held Corban to 33.9%. The visiting Warrior team made just two field goals in the first quarter. LC State forced 27 turnovers and scored 42 points off of them and outrebounded Corban 45-29. LC State dealt 21 assists on 38 made baskets.

“Our whole team was great tonight and I love getting back over that 20-assist mark,” Orlandi said. “I thought our guards did a good job defending and we communicated well tonight. Our defense is taking steps in the right direction. A fun weekend for our team and now the focus turns to next weekend. They will be toughest road games we have had this season, but a great opportunity is in front of us.”

Corban’s Alyssa Wyllie scored 15 points and Madison Hodnett added 12.
