Triple Jumpers Highlight First Day of Lew Thorne Invite

Alisha Alexander, Assistant Athletic Director-Sports Information

(La Grande, OR),  A small group of Warriors opened competition at the Lew Thorne Invite hosted by Eastern Oregon on Friday and triple jumpers Sydnie Zywina and Trenton Johnson highlighted the afternoon with a pair of national standards. The women’s distance medley relay had a successful run and improved upon its national standard in its win.

Zywina and Johnson won their respective triple jump events to kick off the meet at EOU. Zywina cleared a distance of 12.01m for an A standard. Though just short of her season-best mark of 12.02m, today’s mark would rank fourth in the NAIA. Johnson jumped a season-best 14.39m for a B standard that ranks in the top 20.

The women’s distance medley relay team of Grace Tiegs, Emily Collins, Camille Ussher and Damaris Kibiwot won the race in La Grande with a time of 12:28.33. Once officially converted to account for the size of the track later tonight, the Warrior women will improve on their position in the NAIA ranks.

The Warrior men just missed a qualifying time with a raw mark of 10:27.12. The team of Johnson, Tristin O’Brien, Griffen Parsells and Kobe Wessels placed fifth in the field.

Faith Wersland led a pair of Warrior women in the weight throw with a second-place mark of 13.14m. Freshman Hope Zollman was ninth (10.62m). Sam Weller led the men with a seventh-place mark of 12.88m with Tanner Beltz-Childs and Jr Mendoza in 10th with matching marks of 11.71m.
