CLARKSTON – Firefighters from Asotin County Fire District #1, City of Clarkston, and City of Lewiston were called to a large grass fire threatening homes Friday afternoon in the Clarkston Heights.
Asotin County Fire District #1 posted to their Facebook page that fire crews were able to surround the fire, which was brought under control within about half an hour.
According to the post, the fire was caused by a property owner mowing a dry lot. It is suspected sparks from the mower hitting a rock or other object ignited the dry grass.
Asotin County Fire District #1 Chief Noel Hardin stated the fire conditions in the valley have turned to extreme with very dry fuel. He stated if you are going to mow in dry grassy areas to do it early in the day when temperatures are lower and the humidity is higher.
No homes were burned, but minor damage was reported to have occurred to neighborhood fences. There were no reported injuries.
