(Washington, D.C.) The Biden Administration approved student loan relief for more than 150,000 borrowers on Monday – bringing the total number of Americans who have had their student debt cancelled by the Administration to over 5 million.

According to the Biden Administration, almost 85,000 of the borrowers attended schools “that cheated and defrauded their students,” 61,000 of the borrowers have total and permanent disabilities, and 6,100 are public service workers.  Monday’s action will total over $4.2 billion.

“Since Day One of my Administration, I promised to ensure higher-education is a ticket to the middle class, not a barrier to opportunity, and I’m proud to say we have forgiven more student loan debt than any other administration in history,” says a statement from President Joe Biden.

The U.S. Education Department says Biden’s 28 debt relief actions, including Monday’s, total $183.6 billion in student loan forgiveness.
