Britt Punches Nationals Ticket, Kirk Breaks 54-Year-Old Record at Whitworth

SPOKANE – The Warriors braved the cold and rainy conditions on Friday at the Whitworth Peace meet and came away with a lot of personal-bests, two school records and an automatic-qualifying standard for outdoor nationals. Ashley Britt improved on her 400m hurdle time to punch her ticket to the national meet, London Kirk broke the 200m record set in 1969, and the men’s 4x100m relay shattered the previous school best.

THE WOMEN

Britt hit the automatic-qualifying standard in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:03.14. She finished second in the field, Dalli Elison was 14th (1:12.21) and Keelyn Pilcher placed 16th (1:13.74).

Freshman Emily Collins ran a pair of season-bests with a time of 57.85 in the 400m and 26.24 in the 200m. She was second in the 400m and 10th in the 200m.

Madigan Kelly ran a B standard time of 14.43 to take second overall in the 100m hurdles. Britt was sixth (15.86). Kelly was the top LC finisher in the 200m (25.91).

Freshman Chloe Overberg ran the fourth-fastest 5,000m in LC State history with a time of 18:04.82. Grace Dixon and Clara Stephens also ran personal-best times in the event. Dixon finished eighth (19:01.90) and Stephens was 13th (19:34.77). Abigail Gorton placed 14th (20:00.11), Haileyann Johnson was 16th (21:09.25) and Madison Howe was 17th (21:13.45).

Cassidy Henderson set a personal-best in each of her attempts in the hammer throw. She finished 21st with a mark of 38.06m. She was 28th in the shot put (8.19m) and 32nd in the discus (27.13m). Grace Osborne was 17th in both the discus (33.88m) and shot put (9.46m) and 28th in the hammer throw (31.21m).

Brooklyn Shell ran a personal-best time of 2:23.73 in the 800m to finish 21st, just behind teammate Geraldin Correa who finished 19th (2:19.58). In the 1,500m, Shell finished eighth (4:47.91), Grace Tiegs was 30th (5:11.93) and Grace McCormick placed 36th (5:30.71).

The team of Britt, Collins, Dalli Elison and Kelly ran a time of 49.40 in the 4x100m relay to place third.

In field events, Emma Harless hit a personal-best mark of 1.47m in the high jump to finish 13th. Kea Stieglitz finished sixth in the javelin throw with a mark of 38.33m.

THE MEN

Kirk broke the longest-standing record in program history with his run in the 200m. The Deary native clocked a time of 21.67, the fastest time by a Warrior since 1969, to win the event. He ran a time of 10.92 in the 100m to take third.

The program record in the 4x100m relay fell with a run of 42.45 by Jordan Castillo, Kirk, Justin Krabbenhoft and Jedidiah Barnaby.

Barnaby placed seventh in the 100m (11.11) and 10th in the 200m (22.79). Castillo placed 16th in the 100m with a time of 11.36 and Tanner Sibert finished 32nd with a personal-best time of 12.05. Trenton Johnson took 36th in the 200m (24.06) and Sibert was 42nd (24.76).

Thrower Sam Weller continued to climb the ranks in the LC State record book with his mark in the shot put. The freshman threw to a distance of 13.71m to finish 13th overall. He was 26th in the hammer throw with a PR of 33.12m and 38th in the discus (32.91m). Jon Wattles led the group with a sixth-place finish in the hammer with a PR of 41.83m and 25th-place finish in the discus (36.96m).

Jaycob Atencio was 33rd in the discus (34.23m) and 21st in the hammer (35.15m). Jack Hardee finished 33rd in the shot put (10.65m) and 14th in the hammer (37.77m), and Tanner Beltz-Childs was 44th in the discus (26.12m) and 37th in the shot put (9.93m).

Carter Gordon ran a big PR in the in the 800m to win the event with a time of 1:53.36, putting him in LC State’s top five all-time. Griffen Parsells and Kobe Wessels also ran career-best times in the event with times of 1:54.02 and 1:57.77, respectively.

Brycen Kempton ran a career-best time of 31:37.26 to finish second overall in the 10,000m. Connor Turpin was ninth (32:21.70) and Connor Alexander ran a personal-best time of 33:38.24.

Wessels led the LC men in the 1,500m with a time of 4:01.49 to take 12th. Cooper Carlson ran a PR of 4:07.77 to place 20th, Tristin O’Brien was 38th (4:19.10) and Tristan Wood took 45th (4:36.76).

Fellow distance runner Brycen Brown finished 11th in the field in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:46.90.

Ike Hopper won the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.75. Braden Wuthrich was fifth in the high jump with an outdoor personal-best of 1.87m to tie for fifth-best all-time, and 18th in the long jump (5.41m).

LC State had two teams in the 4x400m relay, led by the quartet of Brown, Carlson, Parsells and Gordon in fifth (3:25.06). The group of Hopper, Johnson, Castillo and Wessels finished seventh (3:28.20).

Johnson was also in action in the triple jump. The freshman hit a distance of 12.62m to take sixth.

The Warriors travel to Spokane for the final time this season for the Whitworth Twilight on April 13.
