CELEBRATE THE FOUNDATION OF AMERICA

LEWISTON, ID: The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution urges Americans to reflect on the United States Constitution during this month’s annual observance in honor this foundational document of national governance. The DAR initiated the observance in 1955, when the service organization petitioned the U.S. Congress to dedicate September 17–23 of each year to the commemoration of Constitution Week.

Congress adopted the resolution, and on August 2, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it into Public Law #915. The celebration’s goals are threefold: to encourage the study of the historical events that led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787; to remind the public that the Constitution is the basis of America’s great heritage and the foundation for its way of life; and to emphasize U.S. citizens’ responsibility to protect, defend and preserve the U.S. Constitution.

DAR will be at Clarkston United Methodist Church along with Clarkston Mayor Monika Lawrence on September 17th at 1:00 pm for Bells Across America with flags and bells to celebrate the signing of the U.S. Constitution and ring the bells 13 times for the 13 original colonies. The community is invited to attend this event to celebrate our U.S. Constitution. Highlands Elementary School (Clarkston, WA) 5th and 6th graders will celebrate U.S. Constitution Week with a program by US History teacher, Tim Weber, on September 18th in the afternoon. DAR members will have a U.S. Flag raising and lead the students in the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a few words about the importance of the U.S. Flag and U.S. Constitution. The cities of Lewiston, ID (September 11th), Clarkston, WA (August 28th) and Asotin, WA (September 11th) are commemorating U.S. Constitution Week with Proclamations as well as Independent School District No. 1 in Lewiston, ID at their Board meeting on September 11th. “We are excited that our communities and schools are commemorating Constitution Week with proclamations and education lessons,” says Alice Whitman Chapter Regent Judith Higgins.

“The Constitution is an important document to every citizen, and we encourage everyone to take a moment to appreciate its remarkable foundation impacting all Americans every day.” The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is a women’s service organization whose members can trace their lineage to an individual who contributed to securing American independence during the Revolutionary War. Today’s DAR is dynamic and diverse, with over 185,000 members in 3,000 chapters in the United States and abroad. DAR members annually provide millions of hours of volunteer service to their local communities across the country and world. DAR chapters participate in projects to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Over one million members have joined the organization since its founding in 1890.
