Clarkston High School transports the LC Valley to Bikini Bottom

CLARKSTON – Who lives in a pineapple under the sea and became the hottest star on Broadway? Why, it’s SpongeBob SquarePants, and now he is here with all his crazy, creatures of the ocean deep to rock the valley!

Broadway’s critically acclaimed The SpongeBob Musical will be performed by the CHS drama club at the Clarkston High School Auditorium February 17-26, 2023.  Performances are Friday and Saturdays at 7pm, and Saturdays and Sundays at 2pm.

The show is a musical adaptation of Nickelodeon’s long-running animated children’s sitcom, SpongeBob Squarepants. Stakes are higher than ever before as SpongeBob and all of Bikini Bottom face the total annihilation of their undersea world. Chaos erupts. Lives hang in the balance. And just when all hope seems lost, a most unexpected hero rises up and takes center stage. SpongeBob sets out to prove that he is  more than just a “simple sponge,” in an effort to save his beloved home. The power of optimism really can save the world!

The SpongeBob Musical is based on the beloved animated series created by Stephen Hillenburg and features a book by Kyle Jarrow, with original songs by Original Songs by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Lady Antebellum, Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, Lady A, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants, T.I.And Songs by David Bowie, Tom Kenny & Andy Paley

“This is a show for everyone,” said director, Larry Goodwin.  “It’s kid friendly, but not just for kids.  SpongeBob fans will love the nostalgia and favorite references to the show, but you don’t have to have ever seen an episode of SpongeBob to love these quirky characters as they fight to save the world, all the while singing and dancing their way into your hearts.”

Music Director, Amy Stout, says, “These young actors sound amazing!  You will not believe that you are at a high school production.  They give their all in every moment, and they amaze me every day. Each song is written by different famous musicians, so they are tackling every genre of music – pop, rock, broadway, country, punk, hip hop – and more. The show is quite an artistic collaboration, and such a fun challenge for the cast to tackle, and they are doing it spectacularly. It’s hilarious and heartfelt, and truly has something for everyone in it. Don’t miss this show!”

“These young people are dancing!  There’s hip hop, tap, jazz, country line dancing – the list goes on and on, and I love it,” shares choreographer, Abby Seward.

Larry Goodwin directs this production, and he, Kymee Martinak, and Jon Lane have beautifully transformed the CHS Performing Arts Theatre into an underwater playland for the inhabitants of Bikini Bottom and the audiences.
