Last November, a jury found Montrez Mayberry (29 yoa, Spokane, WA) guilty of Felony Stalking and Felony Domestic Violence Battery. The jury heard evidence of how Mr. Mayberry came to the victim’s house in violation of a No Contact Order and physically battered her. Prosecutor Patzer laid out the facts that the victim and Mr. Mayberry went to McDonalds June 13 of 2023. At McDonalds, Mr. Mayberry accused the victim of ordering wrong and caused an argument on the way home. At the house, Mr. Mayberry threw the food over the bedroom which also hit the victim. Mr. Mayberry then slapped the victim and attempted to punch her but it was blocked. When the victim blocked the punch, she broke her finger. The victim and Mr. Mayberry left the house and while she was driving, he hit her in the eye which caused her to lose her vision. After she pulled over, Mr. Mayberry began driving them both around. Ultimately, they arrived back at the original residence where she was able to get help. Lewiston Police Department Officers observed several bruises on the victim’s legs and a broken finger. The victim explained to police the multiple bruises were from prior issues with Mr. Mayberry over several days. After a day of deliberation, the jury found Mr. Mayberry guilty on the Felony Stalking and Felony Domestic Violence Battery.

At sentencing today, Prosecutor Patzer argued for a full imposed sentence in prison while the defense attorney argued for probation. After a lengthy statement from Judge Monson, he sentenced Mr. Mayberry to 15 years with the possibility of parole after 10 years. “No one should have to live in fear. Today’s sentence should be a reminder to every victim there is a way out and you are strong enough to leave your abuser. If you need help leaving a domestic violence relationship, please reach out to the local police department or the YWCA (208)743-1535,” said Elected Prosecutor Justin Coleman
