Diesel Tank Ruptures Following Head-On Collision Between Kamiah and Orofino

OROFINO – The Idaho State Police responded to a two-vehicle collision that occurred just before 7:51 pm on May 27th, in Lewis County, Idaho.

The crash occurred on US Highway 12 near milepost 51. A 61-year-old male, from Moscow, Idaho, was driving a yellow 2023 Ford Transit van, westbound on US12, when he reportedly drifted across the center line. A 46-year-old male from Victor, Montana, was driving a white 2020 Kenworth and traveling eastbound on US12. The two vehicles collided head-on in the eastbound lane of travel.

The 61-year-old was transported by ground ambulance to the local hospital. Evidence at the scene indicated both drivers had been wearing their seatbelts.

The impact between the two vehicles caused the diesel tank on the Kenworth to rupture, and approximately 100 gallons of diesel spilled on the roadway.

The highway was completely blocked for 3.5 hours.
