BOISE — Time’s running out to file the 2021 Idaho income tax returns. The Idaho State Tax Commission says taxpayers who qualified for an automatic extension to file must send in their return and full payment by October 17.
“We expect to receive about 36,000 individual income tax returns in October,” Tax Commission Chairman Jeff McCray said. “That’s in addition to the 925,000 returns we’ve received so far this year.”
Idaho law allows taxpayers to avoid a penalty for filing a late return if they have an extension. But they’ll still owe 3% interest on any income tax due that wasn’t by April 18, the original due date.
Filers can submit income tax returns electronically. Some may qualify to prepare and file the return online for free. Visit tax.idaho.gov/freefile (https://tax.idaho.gov/i-1027.cfm) to learn more.
Tax payments can be made electronically through tax.idaho.gov/epay (https://tax.idaho.gov/i-1042.cfm). The free Quick Pay (https://idahotap.gentax.com/tap?Link=QuickPay) option allows payments without creating a special account.
If you filers qualify for Idaho’s two 2022 tax rebates, they’ll receive them after the Tax Commission has processed the 2021 tax return.
