Hughes’ Under-Par Final Round Boosts Women to Second-Place Finish, Men Third at College of Idaho Invitational

CALDWELL, Idaho – Lewis-Clark State College freshman Kylee Hughes had a round to remember by shooting a 1-under-par 71 during the final round of the College of Idaho Invitational at the TimberStone Golf Course on Tuesday. Hughes’ round was just one of two under par on the women’s side and helped LC State shoot its best round of the season with a 300, smashing its previous best score by 25 shots.

That helped LC State place second among the Cascade Collegiate Conference schools in the first of three regular-season conference tournaments this season. Defending national champion No. 1 British Columbia won the tournament with a 574, followed by LC State at 625. On the men’s side, No. 8 British Columbia claimed the title at 868. NNU, an NCAA Division II program, was second at 885, while LC State was third at 886 after a 299 round on Tuesday.

“The women had a good round today,” LC State coach Zach Anderson said. “They started off with some amazing golf, but just leaked a little bit coming in.”

Hughes, playing in only her second collegiate match, had the second-best round of the day and recorded just one of five under-par rounds in the tournament. She birdied three holes on the front nine with just one bogey for a 34 and added birdies on holes No. 17 and 18.

“She really showed out today and that was big for her confidence,” Anderson said. “The women have a goal for the season as far as average team score and this round put them right on track.”

Alexandra Schmidt and Kyla Currie both had 76s for the Warrior women, while Deana Caruso rounded out the scoring with a 77. Hughes, who had an 82 in the opening round on Monday, wound up tying for ninth overall at 153, while Schmidt and Currie tied for 12th at 157.
The Warrior men entered the day 11 behind UBC but were unable to get things going. Sondre Andresen did match par with a 72 as he had three birdies during his round. Jorgen Lie Viken’s 75 left him as the top Warrior finisher overall with a 222, which placed him 12th. Devon Caruso had a 74 Tuesday, which gave him a 54-hole total of 223 along with Andresen.

That left the two tied for 15th overall. “The guys struggled coming in but they saw that they can compete with UBC,” Anderson said. “Sondre had a solid round with his 72. Jorgen again had a consistent tournament.” Anderson said this was a good tournament for the Warriors to build on. “If we make a few better decisions and more putts, we are right in it,” he said. “There is a lot of room for improvement but we are on the right track.” Both Warrior teams will participate in the second conference tournament on Sept. 26-27 at the Multnomah Invitational in Portland, Ore.
