LC Golfers Brown Leads Men, Currie Leads Women After First Day of Beartooth Invitational

LAUREL, Mont. – The Lewis-Clark Men’s Golf team has three golfers in the top-five and sits in second place, the women are in third, after the first day of the Beartooth Invitational at the Laurel Golf Club.

Bryden Brown recorded 13 birdies over his two rounds to record back-to-back rounds of 1-under, 71 to sit in third place, four strokes behind the leader. Alex Navarro went 4-under in his final 13 holes to record a 70 in the second round after a round of 73 in the first. Oscar Behle started the day with nine straight pars and is currently tied with Navarro for fifth place.

“The guys put it all together today,” coach Zach Anderson said. “It finally clicked, and it was fun to watch. A few things to clean up still, but it was nice to see their work pay off. Excited to be in contention tomorrow.”

The Warrior men had the lead after the first round but could not keep up with a North Idaho team that shot an 8-under, 280 as a team in the second round. LC State sits five strokes behind the Cardinals.

Kyla Currie recorded a trio of birdies in her two rounds to sit in a tie for fifth place. Dallis Shockey birdied No. 18 in her second round to move into a tie for ninth, she is four strokes behind Currie.

“Dallis really stepped up today,” Anderson said. “Excited to see the progress she has made finally pay off.”

The Warrior women improved by six strokes as a team in the second round, but trail NCAA Division II Montana State-Billings by 13 strokes and leader Rocky Mountain by 23.

“This was the first time most of these girls have walked 36 (holes),” Anderson said. “It was a big time grind out there today, but they weathered the struggles and ended up shooting their low round of the year.”

Both teams will be back in action for round three and the conclusion of the Beartooth Invitational on Tuesday.
