LA GRANDE, Ore. – The LC State Men’s Track and Field team placed second overall with 130 points to wrap up the 2023 Cascade Conference Track and Field Championships, presented by U.S. Bank. The women were fourth with 112 points. Overall, the Warriors came away with seven individual titles, 20 all-conference finishes and seven school records. More Warriors hit national marks in the last competition ahead of the national meet.
The top three in each event earned All-Cascade Conference honors and the top eight earned points towards the team total.
THE MEN
The Warriors showed their dominance in the 800m with the top two spots. Carter Gordon won the event (1:53.58) and Griffen Parsells was second (1:54.37). Conner May placed ninth (1:56.58) and Kobe Wessels placed 13th (1:57.88).
LC State swept the 400m hurdles with Ike Hopper winning on the men’s side. He ran a time of 54.95, and Brycen Brown was seventh (1:00.97).
London Kirk followed up his win in the 400m with a third-place mark in the 200m. He broke his own LC State record with a time of 21.21 which is an automatic mark for nationals. Jordan Castillo was ninth (21.88), Jedidiah Barnaby was 14th with a personal-best time of 22.39 and Tanner Sibert was 17th (23.87).
The 4x400m relay team of Hopper, Kirk, Justin Krabbenhoft and Gordon set a school record and ran a B standard time of 3:17.38 to finish second overall.
Freshman Trenton Johnson smashed his own school record and hit a provisional mark in the triple jump at 14.41m. He was second in the event to earn all-conference accolades.
Senior Nikolous Bertling earned All-CCC honors with a third-place finish in the pole vault. He cleared a height of 4.50m, Caleb Moore was eighth at 4.30m and Zayne Maughan was ninth (4.30m).
Barnaby broke the program record in the 100m dash. He placed 10th at the meet with a time of 10.85. Castillo also ran a personal-best and now sits second behind Barnaby at 10.87. He placed 11th and Sibert was 20th with a PR of 11.66.
Thrower Jon Wattles set a PR in the discus throw to finish seventh at the meet. His mark of 41.06m ranks fifth in the LC record book.
In the 5,000m, Brycen Kempton finished 12th (16:03.41) and Clay Shumaker was 14th (16:05.31).
THE WOMEN
Ashley Britt repeated as the 400m hurdle champion with a season-best time of 1:02.55. Sara Hathaway also earned All-Cascade Conference honors in third place (1:04.79). Dalli Elison was 12th (1:09.83) and Keelyn Pilcher finished 16th (1:12.73).
Lewiston native Anika Grogan earned All-CCC honors in the 200m with a time of 24.86. She placed third and Emily Collins was ninth with a personal-best of 25.59.
The team of Grogan, Hathaway, Geraldin Correa and Collins earned all-conference honors in the 4x400m relay with a provisional-standard time of 3:55.24.
Triple jumper Sydnie Zywina destroyed her own record in the event with a leap of 12.01m to hit an A standard for nationals. She was second overall and Alexa Horsley was 11th (10.02m).
Senior Cynthia Smith earned All-Cascade Conference honors in the pole vault when she cleared a height of 3.25m. Emberlynn Mack was fifth (2.95m) and Desiree Winslow was seventh (2.65m).
Kea Stieglitz hit a season-best mark in the javelin to finish fifth overall. Her throw of 40.46m is a provisional mark for nationals.
Madigan Kelly ran the first track event of the day and set a school record in the 100m dash. She finished seventh overall with her time of 12.30.
Geraldin Correa led a trio of Warrior women in the 800m with a fifth-place finish (2:14.91). Grace Tiegs ran a career-best to finish eighth (2:21.11) and Brooklyn Shell PRed in 11th (2:21.84).
Freshman Chloe Overberg finished ninth in the 5,000m (19:17.51). Grace Osborne placed ninth in the discus throw (35.04m).
