SALEM, Ore. – The LC State Men’s Golf team collectively shot under par, women sit in second, after the opening round of the Willamette Valley Cup at the Creekside Golf Club.

THE MEN

LC State jumped out a 13-shot advantage as the team combined for a 6-under, 282 first round. Bryden Brown and Luke West each shot a 3-under, 69 to sit tied for second individually. Alex Navarro and Oscar Behle finished at even par. Hunter Millsap completed his round at 2-over, 74.

“The men finally executed today,” Anderson said. “We stuck to our game plan and took advantage of our opportunities.”

Brown opened his round with a bogey on No. 17, but went on a wild run starting on the par-5 No. 1. The Moscow native hit four consecutive birdies on Nos. 1-4.

West attacked the par-5s on the front nine. On the 507-yard No. 1, West finished with an eagle. Three holes later on the 480-yard No. 4 he recorded another eagle. The freshman went 5-under on the four par-5s. Navaro opened his round with an eagle on the No. 16 par-5.

“The job is not done yet and still work to do tomorrow,” Anderson said. “We’ll see if we can close out this hectic last two weeks with a solid round tomorrow.”

THE WOMEN

Dallis Shockey scored a birdie on No. 13 and shot a 7-over, 79 to sit in a tie for fifth place. Natalia Gomez birdied the same No. 13 par-5 and snuck into the top-10 with an 8-over, 80.

“The women had some ups and downs,” coach Zach Anderson said. “The course was definitely set up a bit tougher for them. Hoping for a more consistent round tomorrow to end this stretch with a good final round.”

The Warriors hold a 14-stroke advantage over Whitman for second place. It will be difficult to catch George Fox who shot a 296 as a team to take a 26-stroke advantage. The Bruins hold the top three spots on the individual leaderboard.
