Lewiston Police Department Accepting Applications for 2024 Citizen Police Academy

LEWISTON – The Lewiston Police Department has scheduled its Citizen Police Academy for March 19 through May 28.  The Lewiston Police Citizen Academy provides a mechanism for educating the public about the criminal justice system and crime prevention and is also a means to strengthen the citizen/police partnership to make the community a better and safer place to live. The overall goal is to gain support and understanding of police work by explaining the operations of the Lewiston Police Department. The Department hopes that participating citizens will gain a greater understanding of police work/procedures as opposed to the enforcement portrayed on television and in the movies.

Classes

The Lewiston Police Department conducts a 10-session (10 weeks) Citizen Police Academy for 20 participants yearly. Classes are held each Tuesday evening from 6 to 9 pm at the Lewiston Police Department Training Center. There is no cost to the student for the 10-week course. The Police Department only asks that each person in attendance commit to attend each of the 10 classes. Attendees must be at least 18 years of age.

Curriculum

The curriculum includes an overview of:

  • Crime scene investigation
  • Drug enforcement
  • The Enhanced 911 System
  • The Police Department
  • Pursuit driving
  • Recruitment and training
  • The School Resource Program
  • TAC team/SWAT team
  • Other agencies involved with the Lewiston Police Department

Hands-On Presentations

There will be hands-on presentations including firearm familiarization and at least a ten-hour Ride-Along with a Lewiston Police Officer.

Sensitive Material

Due to the sensitive nature of the material and ride-alongs, a safety check will be completed on the applicants prior to acceptance into the class.
