Most Idaho Taxpayers Qualify to E-File for Free

(Boise, ID) Want to e-file your income tax return without paying money to do it? Most Idahoans can prepare and e-file their federal and Idaho taxes for free through two programs offered by the Idaho State Tax Commission and the IRS.

Direct File

The new Direct File program is for Idahoans with simple returns. To use the program taxpayers must have lived in Idaho for all of 2024 and must take the standard deduction. They can’t itemize, but they can take certain credits and deductions.

Taxpayers prepare and file their federal return first with the IRS Direct File tool (https://directfile.irs.gov/?utm_source=National-Nonprofit&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Cfa26&utm_id=directfile&utm_content=QRcode) , and then they click a button to transfer their information to Idaho’s FileYourStateTaxes tool to complete the Idaho return.

More than 200,000 people qualify for the program. To get started and to learn more about the eligibility requirements, visit directfile.irs.gov (https://directfile.irs.gov?utm_source=National-Nonprofit&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Cfa26&utm_id=directfile&utm_content=QRcode) .

Free File

Most Idahoans with an adjusted gross income of $84,000 a year or less probably qualify for the Free File program (https://tax.idaho.gov/freefile) . It features offers from software companies that partner with Idaho and the IRS.

Taxpayers should carefully review the offers on the Tax Commission’s Free File page at tax.idaho.gov/freefile to see which ones they qualify for. They should use the links on the page, so they don’t have to pay.

About 66% of Idahoans qualified to use the Free File program last year, but less than 10% took advantage of the service.

Visit tax.idaho.gov (https://tax.idaho.gov/) to check your refund status, get tax forms, make payments, and find tax help. You also can get help by calling the Tax Commission at (208) 334-7660 in the Boise area or toll free at (800) 972-7660.

The deadline to file 2024 income taxes is Tuesday, April 15.
