(Boise, ID) Want to e-file your income tax return without paying money to do it? Most Idahoans can prepare and e-file their federal and Idaho taxes for free through two programs offered by the Idaho State Tax Commission and the IRS.
Direct File
The new Direct File program is for Idahoans with simple returns. To use the program taxpayers must have lived in Idaho for all of 2024 and must take the standard deduction. They can’t itemize, but they can take certain credits and deductions.

Free File
Most Idahoans with an adjusted gross income of $84,000 a year or less probably qualify for the Free File program (https://tax.idaho.gov/freefil
Taxpayers should carefully review the offers on the Tax Commission’s Free File page at tax.idaho.gov/freefile to see which ones they qualify for. They should use the links on the page, so they don’t have to pay.
About 66% of Idahoans qualified to use the Free File program last year, but less than 10% took advantage of the service.
