Alisha Alexander | Assistant Athletics Director-Sports Information

LEWISTON – Maddie Holm notched her fourth straight double-double to help lead the No. 7 Lewis-Clark State Women’s Basketball team to its eighth victory of the season on Friday. The hosting Warriors defeated the visiting Corban Warriors by a final of 86-50 to improve to 4-0 in Cascade Conference play.

“I was extremely proud of the way we shared the basketball tonight,” Head Coach Caelyn Orlandi said. “We moved the ball so well and found our open teammates all game long. We took care of the basketball well tonight as well and that was a big step for us as a team.”

Holm led the contest with 18 points and 12 rebounds to go with four steals and three assists. LC State collected 17 steals in total and forced 23 turnovers with 29 points off the turnovers. LC also tallied 25 assists on 34 made field goals.

“Maddie Holm is so incredibly tough and her ability to rebound the ball and score the basketball is truly special,” Orlandi added. “I am so proud of this team, their willingness to share the basketball, and their dedication to each other.”

When made aware of her stats, Holm attributed the success to her teammates.

“We had 25 assists, so I couldn’t have scored without my teammates,” Holm said.

HOW IT HAPPENED

LC State opened the contest with a 6-0 run on four points by Ellie Sander and a layup by Callie Stevens. A basket by Sitara Byrd sparked another six-point run, with four from Byrd and two from Holm, to push the advantage to 12-2 by 5:07. Free throws by Mataya Green closed out the first quarter with LC in front 14-10.

Darian Herring and Byrd tallied back-to-back buckets in the first three minutes of the second frame before a triple by Stevens launched LC to a nine-point rally, capped by another 3 by the senior, to give Lewis-Clark State a 27-15 lead with 4:32 to play in the half. Tatum Brager drained a 3-pointer, Lindsey Wilson added a free throw and Holm and Herring each found their way to the basket to send LC into the locker room with a 35-27 advantage.

Four points by Holm and a 3 by Stevens had LC State on a seven-point run in the third quarter for a 42-27 lead at 8:51. Wilson scored three straight LC baskets and a bucket by Holm made it 52-36 midway through the period. The momentum carried to a 63-45 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes.

After an opening basket by Corban, LC State struck for 18 straight points to surge ahead 81-47 with 2:41 to play. Sander and Holm each scored six points in the run, Green added four and Wilson scored two. Grace Beardin closed out the contest with a basket in the final minute.

Holm led the contest in scoring (18) and rebounding (12) with an 8-for-12 night from the field. Stevens and Holm each had four steals and Stevens added 14 points on four 3-pointers. Wilson scored 12 points while Sander and Green each had 10 points. Stevens and Sander each dished out five assists.

“Callie Stevens played big minutes tonight and a 5.0 assist/turnover ratio tonight for her was spectacular,” Orlandi said. “Mataya came in off the bench and took great shots and fought hard for rebounds, Ellie hit big 3s for us and found her open teammate all game long. All three freshmen played with confidence, and we are excited Lindsey is back.”

The Warrior women shot 44.7% as a team and held Corban to 28.6% from the field.

Maddie Godwin led Corban with 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Sevennah Van Di Riet had eight boards.
