Provocative Musical ‘Cabaret’ at Hartung Theatre for Six Shows

MOSCOW — The provocative musical “Cabaret” will play in six showings starting Friday, Oct. 28, on the University of Idaho’s Fagerbakke Stage in the Hartung Theatre, 625 Stadium Drive in Moscow.

Presented by the Department of Theatre Arts, the Lionel Hampton School of Music (LHSOM), and the Department of Movement Sciences, “Cabaret” is known to many thanks to the award-winning film version starring Liza Minnelli, Michael York and Joel Grey.

“Cabaret” examines the decadence and decline in Germany’s Weimar Republic as the Nazis ascend to power, overturning the government and replacing it with what would become the insidious Third Reich. The period was marked by massive inflation, scapegoating minoritized people as responsible for the nation’s troubles, erosion of citizens’ rights, and overt public attacks on democracy.

The U of I production has two casts directed by Assistant Professor Craig A. Miller for Theatre Arts. Music is directed by Christian Reed and conducted by Professor Vern Sielert from LHSOM, while dance numbers are choreographed by Clinical Associate Professor Melanie Meenan of Movement Science and Shaleyna Higgins.

“Cabaret” contains adult content and is best suited for mature individuals.

Showtimes are:

  • 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28
  • 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29
  • 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30
  • 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4
  • 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5
  • 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6
