PHOENIX – Dominic Signorelli and Charlie Updegrave did the offensive damage for No. 3 Lewis-Clark State Baseball on Friday to help the Warriors edge (RV) St. Thomas (Fla.) 7-6. Each homered in the contest, with Signorelli doing so for the second consecutive game. The duo combined for seven RBI.
The win improves the LC State record to 3-0 ahead of a matchup with No. 1 Southeastern (Fla.) on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Hiroyuki Yamada worked around a leadoff walk to retire the side in his LC State debut on the mound and the offense got work in the bottom of the frame.
Free passes to Carter Booth and Updegrave put two on with two outs for Signorelli. The Warrior third baseman put LC up 3-0 with one swing on a home run to dead center.
STU tallied a run in the second on three straight hits before Yamada struck out a pair to end the threat.
LC State doubled its run total in the bottom of the third on a big swing from Updegrave. Ike George singled and Nick Seamons drew a walk before Updegrave drove a pitch to right to make it a 6-1 LC State advantage.
Decker Stedman came on in relief in the fourth and struck out two in 2.2 innings. He handed the ball over to Brennen Farber in the sixth and the righty struck out the first batter he faced. Stedman gave up two in the frame to cut LC’s lead to 6-3.
Farber struck out the side in the seventh before the Warriors added a run in the home half of the inning. Alex Sol was hit by a pitch then stole second. A base hit by Updegrave knocked in Sol to push the LC advantage to 7-3.
Jadon Williamson took the mound in the top of the ninth and recorded an out before Eli Takalo took over with STU threatening and the lead down to 7-5. After a sacrifice fly made it a one-run game, Takalo sat the final Bobcat batter down swinging to earn the save.
Updegrave led the offense with four RBI on two hits and Signorelli drove in the other three runs.
Stedman earned the win in his outing. Both Stedman and Yamada fanned two. Farber struck out five in 2.1 innings and did not walk a batter.
