St. Joseph Regional Medical Center Publishes 2023 Community Benefit Report

November 8, 2024

(Lewiston, ID) St. Joseph Medical Center today published its community benefit and economic impact report for the 2023 calendar year. This yearly report details how the hospital positively contributes to the Lewis and Clark Valley area and continues to support the health and well-being of those who live and work in the region.

“The healthcare professionals at St. Joseph passionately pursue a remarkable calling that is often life-changing for the patients they see,” said Ed Freysinger, CEO of St. Joseph. “Caring for others is truly a reward in itself, but to see the broader, positive impact our hospital has on our community is extremely gratifying. This report highlights some of our contributions and the value of our partnership with the local residents and communities we serve.”

St. Joseph Regional Medical Center’s 2023 community benefit report summarizes the hospital’s ongoing efforts to meet the growing healthcare needs of its community by welcoming new providers, expanding service lines and continually investing in its facilities and healthcare technology. For example, in 2023, St. Joseph added seven affiliated providers and made more than $8.4 million in capital improvements, including investments in the hospital’s new Acute Rehabilitation Unit, a new Linear Accelerator for cancer treatment, and an Intravenous Ultrasound for the cardiac catheterization lab.

Additionally, St. Joseph’s provided $19 million in charitable or uncompensated health services to those in need, demonstrating the hospital’s continued commitment to ensuring everyone has access to care, regardless of their ability to pay.

St. Joseph also strives to create an environment where providers want to practice, and employees want to work. In 2023, the hospital distributed more than $47 million in salaries, wages, and benefits for its approximately 680 employees, and contributed $160,000 in professional development and tuition assistance to enhance its employees’ opportunities to learn and improve the care they provide their patients.

The report shares several examples of how St. Joseph’s impacts the communities it serves beyond the physical walls of its facilities. Last year, for instance, the organization paid more than $5 million in provider, payroll, property, and sales taxes, displaying its commitment to fiscal responsibility that helps boost the area’s economic well-being. The hospital is also honored to have continued its support of local activities and organizations that contribute to the community, including the All Saints Catholic Church, Asotin County Fair & Hells Canyon Rodeo, Beautiful Downtown Lewiston, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lewis Clark Valley, Clarkston Unified School District, Gina Quesenberry Foundation, Holy Family School, LC Valley Chamber of Commerce, Lewis-Clark State College, Lewis-Clark State College Foundation, Lewiston Little League, Lewiston Roundup Association, Inc., Lewiston Unified School District, Lili GC Foundation, Nez Perce County 4H/FFA, Nez Perce County Fair, The Idaho Food Bank, Twin County United Way, Willow Center, Winter Spirit, Inc., and the YWCA.

“It’s a privilege to be able to support organizations in the area who pursue a similar mission of helping others and uplifting our community,” added Freysinger. “St. Joseph has persevered for more than 120 years in part because of the ongoing support from our dear neighbors, and we like to extend the same courtesy to others.”
