Top-Seeded Southeastern Edges Warriors in Late-Night Battle

Alisha Alexander | LC State Sports Information Director

LEWISTON, Idaho – The rematch between top-seeded Southeastern and LC State had all the fireworks that were expected, but it was the Fire that took the contest by a final of 5-2 in a game that ended after midnight. Isaiah Thomas did all of LC State’s offense damage as the only Warrior to score.

The Warriors take on 10th-seeded MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) on Monday at 11:35 a.m. at Harris Field. LC must win to stay alive in the tournament.

A dropped fly ball in center field put Thomas on second base it the top of the second and a pair of wild pitches brought in the game’s first run. Southeastern answered with a run on a hit in the bottom of the frame.

Starter Drake George was solid through his 4.2 innings with just two runs allowed on four hits. Alec Holmes came on in relief in the fifth and struck out the dangerous Gary Lora to limit the damage with LC trailing 2-1.

Thomas evened the score with a solo shot in the top of the eighth, but Southeastern capitalized with baserunners on in the home half of the inning on a three-run shot to break a 2-2 tie.

Leo Rivera tallied a pair of hits in the contest including a double and Thomas scored both runs.

Holmes was credited with the loss despite striking out three in 2.1 innings. He allowed two runs, George gave up one, and Cameron Smith allowed one. Joe Ball threw the final third of an inning for LC with a strikeout.

The Warriors square off with the Pioneers on Monday at approximately 11:35 a.m., following the conclusion of the first game of the day.
