(CLARKSTON, WA) – Starting June 10th, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Walla Walla District will be implementing a seasonal ban on wood fires in all USACE fire rings, grills, and metal containers at sites along the Lower Snake River. This is a preventive action to minimize the risk of human-caused fires during wildfire season and to protect public lands for continued recreational usage. Hood Park, Charbonneau Park and Fishhook Park are excluded from this ban.
This ban does not prohibit the use of contained charcoal and propane grills for cooking and heating. It’s crucial for visitors to remember that fires on the ground or in rock rings are always prohibited at USACE sites.
Visitors are encouraged to take extra precautions, not only with campfires, but also with other sources of ignition, such as cigarettes, vehicle exhaust systems and, where allowed, charcoal briquettes. Fireworks, including sparklers, are not allowed on any USACE lands at any time.
“This seasonal fire ban is crucial in mitigating wildfire risks,” explained Megan Innes, Natural Resource Manager for Lower Granite Lock and Dam. “We appreciate the public’s understanding and adherence to these guidelines to help protect our natural areas for everyone’s enjoyment.”
All visitors are asked to call 911 if they see problems or issues with fires or suspicious smoke.
