Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife Chum limits increased in Nooksack River

November 28, 2024

Chum limits increased in Nooksack River

Action: Increases the chum portion of the salmon daily limit.

Effective date: Immediately through Nov. 30, 2024.

Species affected: Chum salmon.

Location: Nooksack River (Whatcom County), from the Interstate-5 Bridge (Ferndale) to the confluence of North and South Forks of the Nooksack River. Catch Record Card (CRC) 794.

Salmon rules:

  • Daily limit four salmon, including no more than two wild coho and no more than two chum. Minimum size 12 inches.
  • Night closure in effect.
  • Anti-snagging rule in effect.

Reason for action: Commercial catch indicates chum salmon are returning to Nooksack River at a higher than forecasted rate and the salmon hatchery is expected to meet egg intake goals.

Additional information: Fishery managers encourage anglers to sign up for Fishing Rule Change email notifications and to check for emergency rules on the WDFW website prior to fishing. Refer to the 2024-25 Washington Sport Fishing Rules pamphlet for fishing rules.
