GAINESVILLE, Ga. – The Lewis-Clark State Women’s Tennis team opened the Georgia Gwinnett Invitational with a hard-fought 4-3 loss against Brenau (Ga.) on Thursday.
The loss dropped the Warrior record to 3-9 on the season.
“Despite the long travel day the women displayed much grit against the Golden Tigers,” Head Coach Kai Fong said.
The Warriors earned the doubles point with victories in the top two matchups. Heidi Moyo and April Buckingham teamed up in No. 1 doubles to defeat Mary Wynn Brannon and Sally Brannon 6-4. Anne Mathema and Bonolo Molefe won 6-1 in No. 2 doubles.
“We started strong with the doubles point,” Fong said. “No. 2 doubles (Mathema and Molefe) took command early and stayed on top.”
Five of the six singles matches went to a deciding third set, LC State earned wins in two of them. Moyo needed a third-set tiebreaker to get past Sally Brannon in No. 4 singles 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (3). Buckingham fought back from a second-set loss to get the win in No. 6 singles 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.
“This was certainly a growth experience for the team,” Fong said. “At the end of the day, I felt they competed until the very last point.”
