SPOKANE, Wash. – LC State Track and Field opened the outdoor season with five school records, a pair of automatic-qualifying marks and two provisional marks. The Warriors saw a lot of positives from the young group at the Sam Adams Classic on Saturday.
“A very good first day for outdoor season,” Head Coach Mike Collins said. “Weather cooperated and we had some really great performances today. I think this is the most national qualifiers we’ve had on our opening day of outdoor season with four, and all with stellar first-meet performances. A number of other kids were also very close and I think we’re going to get some those knocked down right away. Looking forward to next week and after having his first meet jitters out of the way and seeing what we can do.”
THE MEN
London Kirk started his outdoor season with a bang. The sophomore set the school record with an A standard time of 47.97 in the 400m to win the event.
Kirk’s busy day continued with a PR in the 200m. His time of 21.73 is the second-best at LC State, and Jordan Castillo ran the third-fastest at 22.48. Kirk was second, Castillo was third and Jed Barnaby placed fourth (22.60).
Hurdler Ike Hopper had the best run of his career with a school-record time of 53.90 in the 400m hurdles. He won the event with the B standard time.
Freshman Trenton Johnson continued his trend from indoor with a record-setting leap in the triple jump. He hit a mark of 13.58m.
In the 2,000m steeplechase, Brycen Brown set the school record with a time of 6:16.05.
Jaycob Atencio threw to a massive career-best in the hammer throw. His mark of 47.47m ranks third all-time at LC. He placed third at the meet and was 10th in the discus (33.96m). Sam Weller hit the third-best mark in program history in the shot put with a distance of 13.29m. He was third in the field. Jon Wattles led the group of LC throwers in the discus at 38.70m to take third, then finished fifth in the shot put (11.49m).
Barnaby ran the second-fastest 100m in program history with a time of 11.04, and Castillo ran the fourth-best at 11.22. They both finished in the top five.
Ian Gardom PRed in the 110m hurdles with an event-winning time of 16.32. Connor Turpin ran a career-best 5,000m (15:20.61) to place 12th, and Connor Alexander was 21st (15:49.36).
Zayne Maughan won the pole vault with a height of 4.32m. Christian Bothwell was fourth (4.02m) and Caleb Moore placed fifth (3.87m). Moore finished 11th in the javelin (38.19m). Justin Krabbenhoft was eighth in the long jump (6.05m) and Bothwell was 11th (5.80m).
In distance events, freshmen Kobe Wessels and Tristin O’Brien competed in the 1,500m. Wessels placed second (3:56.89) and O’Brien was eighth (4:18.50). Carter Gordon led a group of four Warriors in the 800m with a personal-best time of 1:54.79 to win the event. Cooper Carlson was fourth (1:56.36), Wessels was sixth (2:00.98) and O’Brien was 10th (2:08.54).
THE WOMEN
Madigan Kelly wasted little time punching her ticket to nationals in the 100m hurdles. The sophomore clocked a time of 14.22 to finish first, then set the LC State record in the 100m dash with a time of 12.54. As of Saturday night, Kelly’s 100m hurdle time is the fastest in the NAIA.
Sara Hathaway was third in the 100m hurdles (15.27) and Ashley Britt was fourth (15.35). Britt went on to earn a B standard in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:04.41. She won the event, with Hathaway behind her at 1:06.29.
In her LC State debut, Chloe Overberg ran the fifth-fastest 5,000m in program history with a time of 18:10.83. She finished second in the field with Grace Dixon in seventh (19:12.56) and Clara Stephens in eighth (20:02.21).
Brooklyn Shell ran a personal-best time of 4:45.93 to finish fourth in the 1,500m. Both Shell and Grace Tiegs ran the 800m, with Tiegs placing fourth (2:21.51) and Shell taking eighth (2:27.08).
Fresh off her first appearance at nationals, Sydnie Zywina won the triple jump in Spokane with a mark of 10.84m. Alexa Horsley was fourth (9.85m). Kea Stieglitz finished second in the javelin (38.90m) and Kielie Green was seventh (28.85m) in her debut.
Emily Collins won the 400m at the meet with a time of 58.62. She placed second in the 200m (26.25) with Dalli Elison in seventh (27.52) and Emma Harless in 10th (28.32).
Grace Osborne had a strong start to her career in outdoor. The freshman finished fifth in the discus (36.22m) and shot put (10.37m), and placed 10th in the hammer throw (32.00m). Cassidy Henderson finished eighth in the discus (28.22m), sixth in the shot put (8.71m) and eighth in the hammer (34.92m).
Cynthia Smith won the pole vault with a mark of 3.45m. Emberlynn Mack was second (3.05m) and Desiree Winslow finished third (2.60m).
In the high jump, Hathaway was third (1.49m) and Harless was fourth (1.39m). Elison placed fifth in the long jump (4.35m).
Madison Howe and Haileyann Johnson both ran the first 3,000m of their careers. Johnson finished fifth (12:14.02) and Howe was sixth (12:22.83).
