EUGENE, Ore. – The Warriors had the chance to compete at world-renowned Hayward Field on Friday at the UO Twilight in Eugene and saw multiples athletes rise to the occasion. Griffen Parsells punched his ticket to outdoor nationals in the 800m and Sam Weller smashed the LC State record in the shot put. In total, the Warriors had six personal-bests on the day.
MEN
Griffen Parsells ran the best race of his career to earn a top-five finish in the 800m. The sophomore ran a personal-best time of 1:51.93, second-best in school history, for an automatic-qualifying time for outdoor nationals. Conner May was 12th overall (1:55.45) and Carter Gordon was 20th (1:59.07).
Freshman Sam Weller put on a show in the shot put in a day that ended with a school record. The thrower matched his personal-best in his first attempt (13.71m), then bettered it with all but one of his six throws. In his final attempt he threw to distance of 14.34m to finish fifth.
Sprinters Jed Barnaby and Jordan Castillo both PRed in the 100m and solidified their spots in LC State’s top five all-time. Barnaby ran his first sub-11.00 race with a time of 10.99 to take 12th, and Castillo crossed the line in 11.08 to place 15th. Justin Krabbenhoft finished 23rd (11.34).
Castillo also ran a personal-best in the 200m to finish 12th with a time of 22.31. London Kirk led the group in the event in sixth (21.84) and Barnaby was 17th (22.71). Kirk finished fourth in the 400m (49.14) and Ike Hopper was third in the 400m hurdles (55.40).
Brycen Brown placed second in the 3,000m steeplechase (9:41.48), Kobe Wessels was 29th in the 1,500m (4:04.76)
Nik Bertling finished sixth in the pole vault (4.56m) and Braden Wuthrich was seventh in the high jump (1.85m). Trenton Johnson placed fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 13.16m and Ian Gardom was seventh (11.71m).
Senior Jaycob Atencio led a group of Warriors in the hammer throw with a ninth-place finish (45.75m). Jon Wattles was 10th (39.89m) and Jack Hardee finished 11th (38.39m). Wattles also placed fifth in the discus with a throw of 39.19m.
WOMEN
In her first attempt at the high jump since winning the indoor national title in March, Jennah Carpenter hit a provisional-qualifying mark in the event for outdoor nationals. The sophomore cleared a height of 1.66m to finish second at the meet.
Freshman Grace Osborne threw a career-best distance of 37.19m in the discus to finish sixth overall.
Madigan Kelly was second overall, less than one one-hundredth of a second behind a runner from Oregon State, in the 100m hurdles (14.28). Emily Collins was the top LC finisher in the 400m in fifth (58.70) and Anika Grogan was seventh (58.93). Grogan also competed in the 200m and finished seventh (26.14).
Hurdlers Ashley Britt and Sara Hathaway both finished in the top five in the 400m hurdles. Britt was second (1:03.44) and Hathaway placed fourth (1:05.64).
In distance events, Geraldin Correa was eighth (2:18.22).
Kea Stieglitz finished 11th in the javelin (36.98m). Sydnie Zywina was third in the triple jump (10.95m) and Alexa Horsley was fourth (9.96m).
