National Match Day Reveals Three New Family Medicine Residents for Pullman

PULLMAN, WA – On March 15, 2024, Pullman Regional Hospital learned the names of the three newest additions to the three-year Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, Family Medicine Residency Program – Pullman.

Every year on Match Day, the National Resident Matching Program announces where medical students will go for their residency, following graduation from medical school.

The three residents headed to Pullman are Kelsey Mader, a medical student at Ross University School of Medicine from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada; Karly Perin, a medical student at Saba University School of Medicine from Alberta, Canada; and Tuarum Shakir, a medical student at the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine from Kent, Washington.

This is the second cohort for the Pullman Regional Hospital-based WSU Family Medicine Residency Program. Mader, Perin and Shakir will join the first cohort of Dr. Bolu Olawuyi, Dr. Jeffrey Ward, and Dr. Mohammed Younes in Pullman this summer.

This year, the Pullman-based residents were selected from more than 500 applicants representing 235 medical schools from across the country and the world. Of the applications received, 53 individuals were interviewed for the three available positions.

“To have this level of interest in our Pullman program is amazing,” said Dr. Stephen Hall, program director for the WSU Family Medicine Residency Program – Pullman and Pullman Regional Hospital Chief Medical Officer. “It really speaks to the time, energy and passion of our faculty, the support of our local physicians, everyone at Pullman Regional Hospital, WSU and our community, who have welcomed our residents.”

In addition to Dr. Hall, members of the Pullman-based Residency Leadership Team include Dr. Molly Thompson, Associate Program Director; Dr. Katie Hryniewicz; and Dr. Brenna Harris.

During their three-year residency program at Pullman, residents experience rotations through specialties of pediatrics, surgery, emergency medicine, obstetrics and others. Physician residents also see and treat patients, along with Dr. Harris and Dr. Thompson, at the Family Medicine Residency Center, located at 825 SE Bishop Blvd., Suite 401, Pullman, WA 99163, inside Pullman Regional Hospital.

“Access to family medicine is a known challenge for rural communities, and we’re committed to teaching and developing physicians in Pullman,” said Matt Forge, CEO of Pullman Regional Hospital. “Our partnership with WSU is helping us provide long-term solutions for better access to primary care and serve our community. We couldn’t be more excited to welcome another cohort of physician residents to Pullman so they can train, work and live in an exceptional place.”

“We are committed to serving rural communities who deserve exceptional medical care,” said Dr. James Record, dean of the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine. “Every Match Day is an important step in our efforts to create positive changes in health care outcomes in this community.”

The WSU Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, Family Medicine Residency Program – Pullman earned accreditation in May 2021 and is the college’s first rural residency. Construction of the Residency Center at Pullman Regional Hospital was funded entirely through philanthropy and the program continues to be a fundraising priority for Pullman Regional Hospital Foundation and the WSU College of Medicine. This unique partnership allows donors to receive shared credit between the two entities and support the future of family medicine physicians who have a special interest in serving rural communities.
