Center for Arts & History to hold a poetry reading by writer Ricardo Ruiz

September 28, 2024

LEWISTON, Idaho – The Lewis-Clark State College Center for Arts & History is hosting its fall visiting writer, Ricardo Ruiz, on Oct. 11. The event will take place at the center, and will begin at 7 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

Ruiz’s poetry collection titled “We Had Our Reasons” is a winner of the 2023 Washington State Book Award. “We Had Our Reasons” was created in collaboration with other members of the Hispanic farming community in Eastern Washington.

“The poems, vivid and pointed, guide the reader through the thoughts and struggles that come with the decision to leave one’s home in Mexico, and travel to this remote, rural community of the United States,” said Ruiz in describing the collection. “A glimpse into the multi-generational effects of migration is seen through the recounting of the stories of both parents and their children – both documented and undocumented.”

Ruiz will be reading excerpts from this collection which can be purchased at the event. Purchases can be made by cash or check.

The community event is made possible by a generous contribution from the Rosehill Fund and is supported by the LC State Humanities Division and the Center for Arts & History.
