WASHINGTON, D.C.U.S. Senator Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) joined Senate Republican colleagues in reintroducing a constitutional amendment to limit the Supreme Court to nine justices.

“Packing the Supreme Court and increasing its size would open the Court to more partisan infiltration and present greater challenges to fairly and constitutionally settling judicial cases impacting Americans,” said Crapo.  “Protecting our nation’s constitutional checks and balances means keeping the seats at the current number, which has been effective for more than 150 years.”

The Supreme Court has had nine justices since 1869.  The constitutional amendment was first introduced in 2019.

Additional co-sponsors of the amendment include Senators Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Marco Rubio (R-Florida), Kevin Cramer (R-North Dakota), Thom Tillis (R-North Carolina), Steve Daines (R-Montana), John Hoeven (R-North Dakota), Shelley Moore Capito (R-West Virgina), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tennessee), Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Mike Braun (R-Indiana) and Todd Young (R-Indiana).
