F&G will host public meeting to discuss rules governing the take of big game with muzzleloaders

The public meeting will be held on Zoom, and an opportunity to ask questions will take place following the discussion.

Idaho Fish and Game will host a public meeting on Monday, Oct. 30 at 11:45 a.m. MDT to discuss rules governing the take of big game animals during some muzzleloader seasons. The public meeting will be held on Zoom, and an opportunity to ask questions will take place following the discussion. [Note: Members of the public will be kept on mute until the end of the discussion, at which point they will be able to unmute to ask questions.]

This rulemaking seeks to address the decreasing availability of lead-only projectiles for muzzleloaders and the availability of other metal projectiles. Fish and Game has been asked to consider changes to the current limitation for projectile composition in the “muzzleloader only” hunts.

This rulemaking will consider expanding the composition of projectiles allowed in muzzleloader only seasons from those “comprised wholly of lead or lead alloy” to those “comprised of metal or metal alloy.” Fish and Game officials will also evaluate all comments that come in, including those we’ve already received, such as the use of sabots and 209 primers.

Learn more on Fish and Game’s Rulemaking webpage.

The proposed rulemaking was published on Oct. 4 in the Idaho Administration Bulletin. Folks can provide comments on the proposed rule through Oct. 25, 2023 by emailing rules@idfg.idaho.gov.
