LC State Baseball Edges UBC to Earn Series Win

Alisha Alexander | LC State Sports Information Director

LEWISTON – No. 2 LC State Baseball did just enough on Sunday to earn the series victory over (RV) UBC with a 3-1 win in game four. The pitching contingent of Dallas McGill, Alec Holmes, Greg Blackman and Eli Shubert limited the Thunderbirds to an unearned run.

With the win, LC State is 7-3 on the year.

“We did just enough offensively to take the final game against an outstanding British Columbia team,” Head Coach Jake Taylor said. “Pitching was excellent in working out of situations and stranding UBC runners throughout the game.”

LC State gained the early advantage with runs in the first and second. Isaiah Thomas reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on back-to-back singles by Sam Olsson and Jack Sheward.

Dominic Signorelli and Isaac Haws both reached after being hit by pitches in the second inning. Nick Seamons made it 2-0 with an RBI base hit up the middle to plate Sigornelli.

UBC answered with one in the top of the third, but two strikeouts by starter McGill ended the threat with the Warriors still in front. A double play turned by Haws, Pu’ukani De Sa and Jakob Marquez got LC out of a jam in the fourth.

The Thunderbirds threatened once again in the fifth, but catcher Sheward helped LC out of the inning when he cut down a runner trying to steal third. Holmes came out of the bullpen to throw the scoreless inning.

Blackman took over in the sixth and worked out of a bases-loaded situation with a pair of popups.

LC State added a run in the bottom of the eighth with two outs. Signorelli reached on a wild pitch to get things going, and Haws singled to put two on. Seamons loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch and a hard-hit ball by Thomas resulted in a 3-1 lead.

Eli Shubert came on in relief in the top of the ninth and sat UBC down in order to earn the save. Blackman earned the win. McGill struck out five in his three innings.

Seamons, Olsson and Haws each tallied two hits while Seamons and Sheward both drove in a run.
