LC State Track and Field Earns 14 National Marks on Historic Saturday

SPOKANE – Warrior Track and Field took Spokane by storm on Saturday with a staggering 14 national qualifiers and eight school records. Christian Bothwell broke his own record in the heptathlon to put himself in a great position to advance to the national meet, and a host of athletes had career-best performances.

“Wow, what a weekend,” Head Coach Mike Collins said. “Almost ran out of ink trying to keep track of all the new PRs, records and national qualifiers. Outstanding day for Geraldin (Correa), Sydnie (Zywina), Trenton (Johnson), Christian, Carter (Gordon), Jennah (Carpenter) and so many others.”

THE WOMEN

Geraldin Correa led the strongest event for the Warriors on the day in the women’s 800m. The senior destroyed her record in the event with a time of 2:12.84 for the fastest time in the NAIA this season by two seconds. Aubree Williams (2:17.40) and Grace Tiegs (2:18.19) each hit B standards in the race and sit third and fourth in the LC State record book, respectively.

Sydnie Zywina hit the first national mark of the day with a school-record leap in the triple jump. She topped the field with a distance of 11.79m to better her program record and A standard. She ranks 10th in the NAIA in the event.

Defending NAIA National Champion Jennah Carpenter bettered her A standard with a season-best mark of 1.70m in the high jump. She placed second at the meet and ranks fifth in the NAIA this season.

Madigan Kelly shattered her record in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.57. She ran a time of 8.72 to win the prelims before taking the event in the final. Her time ranks ninth in the NAIA this season. She also set the LC State record in the 60m dash with a time of 7.83. Karissa Lindner ran the second-fastest time in school history in the event with a time of 7.92. She also ran an LC State top-five time of 26.09 in the 200m. Sara Hathaway ran a time of 9.22 to place 11th in the hurdles and Carpenter crossed the line in 9.43 to finish 15th.

Sophomore Emily Collins beat her own record in the 400m and hit the B standard with a time of 57.81. She placed seventh in the event and ranks 27th in the NAIA. Anika Grogan was 21st (1:00.51) and Macey Gunderson placed 38th (1:04.29).

The women’s 4x400m relay team of Kelly, Hathaway, Grogan and Collins ran a B standard time of 3:57.99.

Brooklyn Shell ran a PR in the mile to place sixth with the third-fastest time in LC history at 5:09.79. Chloe Overberg (5:33.51), Abigail Peightal (5:36.19) and Grace McCormick (6:17.63) also competed in the event.

Throwers Grace Osborne and Haylee Appleford were in action in the shot put. Osborne hit a PR in the event with a mark of 10.76m to place 15th, while Appleford was 10th at 11.39m.

A trio of Warrior women were in action in the 3,000m. Abigail Gorton led the way with a time of 11:17.00, Madison Howe finished in 12:44.46 and HaileyAnn Johnson clocked a time of 12:52.10.

THE MEN

Bothwell kicked off his historic day with a personal-best time of 8.86 to win the 60m hurdles portion of the heptathlon. The senior placed fourth in both the pole vault (4.16m) and 1,000m (2:57.91) to finish second overall with a school-record total of 4,793 points. The total ranks sixth in the NAIA this season.

Trenton Johnson bested his own record in the triple jump and hit his first A standard with a leap of 14.56m. He placed second overall at the event and ranks 12th in the nation.

Carter Gordon and Griffen Parsells each hit a national standard in the 800m. Gordon ran a massive PR with a time of 1:52.72. The time is the second-best in LC history and ranks seventh in the NAIA this season. Parsells hit a B standard time of 1:54.85 for the fifth-fastest time by a Warrior. Cooper Carlson ran a time of 1:56.65, Conner May ran a 1:57.43, and Kobe Wessels (2:02.27) and Tristin O’Brien (2:03.56) each ran a PR.

In his first race back from injury, London Kirk had a strong showing in the 400m. The outdoor All-American ran a time of 48.30 for an A standard and the 13th-best time in the NAIA this season. Ike Hopper ran a time of 51.49 and Luke Mastroberardino crossed the line if 53.31. Mastroberardino was 15th in the 60m hurdles (9.21).

Sprinter Jedidiah Barnaby bettered his 60m school record and earned the first men’s 60m dash national mark in program history at The Podium. The sophomore ran a time of 6.84 for a B standard in the prelim. He ranks 27th in the NAIA this season. High school teammate Preston Cooper ran the second-best time in LC history at 6.93, and Jordan Castillo climbed to third at 7.03. Barnaby placed 13th in the 200m (22.24) and Cooper was 16th (22.36).

Both LC State pole vaulters hit personal-bests at the Whitworth event. Zayne Maughan now holds sole possession is the second spot in the record book at 4.52m and James Bogdanowicz cleared a mark of 4.22m. Both placed in the top 16.

Four Warriors ran a PR in the 3,000m. Clay Shumaker ran a time of 8:56.49 to lead the group in 25th, Alexander Fry was 26th (8:57.20) and Connor Alexander was 34th (9:00.36). Jacob Adams also ran a career-best time of 9:42.24. Brycen Brown (9:04.49) and Keith Uitdewilligen (9:17.36) also ran the race. Uitdewilligen led LC in the men’s mile with a time of 4:33.75. Shumaker ran the distance in 4:38.61 and Adams clocked a time of 4:54.37.

Sam Weller placed ninth in the shot put (14.14m) and Tanner Beltz-Childs was 41st (9.13m). Ian Gardom cleared a height of 1.78m in the high jump to place 15th. Gardom also placed 14th in the 60m hurdles (9.17).

UP NEXT

The Warriors will compete in one more regular season meet ahead of indoor nationals in the EOU Last Chance Invite on Feb. 17.
