LC State Women’s Tennis Competes in Fall Contests

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Warrior Women’s Tennis opened the 2023-24 campaign on Friday with its lone fall matches of the season. The neutral-site contests took place on the campus of Whitman College where LC State defeated College of Idaho 6-1 before falling to NCAA Division III UC Santa Cruz 7-2.

MATCH ONE: LC State def. College of Idaho 6-1

The Warrior women opened the 2023-24 season with a victory over in-state rival College of Idaho by a final of 6-1. The lineup was filled with five newcomers to the LC State program, along with upperclassman Anne Mathema.

The freshmen duo of Marina Perez and Ana Govea earned their first collegiate wins with a hard-fought 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles, and Mathema teamed up with Pullman native Gwyn Heim for a 6-2 victory in the third doubles slot.

Heim went on to put together the strongest singles performance of the match with a quick 6-0, 6-0 rout of her opponent in No. 3 singles. Govea dropped just one game (6-1, 6-0) in her No. 6 match, while both Mathema (No. 4 singles) and Perez (No. 5 singles) only lost two.

Carisa Liebenberg earned her first win at LC State with a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the second singles flight.

  5. Marina Perez (LCSC) def. Lizzy Sagehorn (C of I) 6-2, 6-0
  6. Ana Govea (LCSC) def. Hailey Mare (C of I) 6-1, 6-0

MATCH TWO: UC Santa Cruz def. LC State 7-2

LC State was challenged by UCSC in the second match of the season. The Warriors took a doubles and singles match, but were defeated in the rest of the contests.

Junior Beatriz Lambru teamed up with newcomer Perez for an 8-7 (10-8) win in No. 1 doubles. Fellow junior Maria Eduarda Santos da Silva earned her first victory of the season with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win in No. 5 singles.
