Nominations Open for Washington Medals of Merit and Valor

OLYMPIA – The Office of the Secretary of State is accepting nominations for Washington’s Medals of Merit and Valor, the highest civilian honors awarded to the people of Washington.

The Medal of Merit honors those who gave a lifetime of service to the people of Washington. Recipients have given selflessly of themselves for a better Washington through public service, literature, medicine, and advocacy.

The Medal of Valor recognizes individuals who have risked their lives or personal safety to save, or attempt to save, another person’s life. The Medal of Valor cannot be awarded to police officers or firefighters, or others whose actions are a result of their public duties as a first responder.

Nominations for the Medal of Merit or Medal of Valor may be filed online by Sept. 15, 2023.

To nominate an individual for the Medal of Merit, citizens are invited to submit a nomination form and accompanying documents to:
