Bridge/2nd/Diagonal Roundabout Construction Begins May 13

City of Clarkton
May 11, 2024

CLARKSTON – Construction Phase 1 will begin on Monday, May 13, 2024, at the intersection of Bridge Street, 2nd Street, and Diagonal Street. The current eastbound lane of Bridge Street and all of 2nd Street and Diagonal Streets will be closed during Phase 1. At least one east and west-bound lane will remain open on Bridge Street during all phases of the project.

The City of Clarkston partnered with the Washington State Department of Transportation on improvements to the intersection utilizing a combination of Federal, State, and Local funding sources.

The project will redesign the intersection, replacing the existing configuration with a roundabout that is anticipated to provide adequate traffic flows for up to 30 years. Multiple studies performed in collaboration with the Lewis Clark Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization over the last 15 years have shown that the Bridge Street, 2nd Street, and Diagonal Street intersection generated the highest number of total delays, queue lengths, and collisions compared to the other intersections studied.

Keller Associates, Inc. provided the design for the intersection reconfiguration. The construction project was awarded earlier this year to Knife River Corporation led by Project Manager Justin Smith. A total cost of $2,316,183.00 is anticipated for the project. The total construction time is 175 working days, scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024.

The City recognizes the impact that this project will have on the community. All efforts will be made to limit the inconvenience to the commuters of the Lewis Clark Valley at the largest and most used intersection in the City of Clarkston. Access to local businesses adjacent to the intersection will remain open during all phases of the construction.

A Phase 1 map is available on the City of Clarkston Website (www.clarkston-wa.com).

Questions can be submitted to City of Clarkston Public Works Director Ed Coffland, P.E.
