LC State Women’s Tennis Tests its Depth

Randy Isbelle | Sports Information Intern

ALEXANDRIA, La. – The Lewis-Clark State Women’s Tennis team pushed its depth to the test as half of the team continued to compete at the LSU Alexandria Invitational at the Aquatic Club while the other half attempted to defend home court against NCAA Division I Montana on Friday.
MATCH ONE: LSU Shreveport (La.) def. LC State 4-0
Marina Perez and Anne Mathema took home a win in No. 3 doubles against Daniela Maldonado and Ana Julia De Paula Madrot. April Buckingham and Heidi Moyo nearly took the victory in No. 1 doubles but lost 7-5 to Pierina Lescher and Sara Sanchez.
“We put out two new doubles combinations at the second and third positions,” coach Kai Fong said. “Our doubles mentality is certainly getting established whereby partnerships are very interchangeable. We were very composed in the doubles.”
Singles matches were halted once LSU Shreveport earned enough points to get the win. Rayana Shah in No. 1 singles and Carisa Liebenberg in No. 6 singles were leading in the second set of their matches when play was called.
“We will get there in singles with more experience. It is rewarding to see the players learning with each, and every match,” Fong said. “The desired team culture is forming. We cannot get better without playing so every match is worth the struggle.”
