No. 4 CUNE Volleyball Takes Friday Matchup Against LC State

(LEWISTON, ID) – NAIA powerhouse Concordia (Neb.) reaffirmed its No. 4 ranking on Friday to hand Warrior Volleyball its first loss of the season. The Bulldogs defeated LC State in three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-16, 25-18.

With the loss, LC State is 1-1 on the young season with one match left on the road trip. The Warriors face Hastings (Neb.) on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. PT in Seward.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Five of the first eight points for LC State came via service errors by CUNE. Juliauna Forgach Aguilar added two kills and blocks by Forgach Aguilar, Missy Mortensen and Gianna Anderson kept things close at 14-10. Kills by Abby Beaton and Anna Merrill paired with a block by Mortensen continued to keep the set within reach before a kill by Taylor Boyce cut the difference to 21-17. The Bulldogs rallied late in the frame to end the set 25-18.

Beaton tallied a pair of kills to keep the LC State deficit at 4-3 early in the second set. The transfer added a third kill in the set after assisting Forgach Aguilar on a block, but CUNE took control of the frame with an 18-10 margin. Despite kills by Mortensen and Forgach Aguilar, the Bulldogs went on to take the set 25-16.

Kills by Forgach Aguilar, Mortensen and Karissa Lindner pushed LC out to a 7-3 lead to start the third frame. After a rally by CUNE, a swing by Gianna Anderson maintained the slim advantage at 9-7 and an ace by Esther Kailiponi helped move the score to 13-11.

Lindner tallied another kill before a block by Mortensen and Merrill for a 14-13 advantage. Concordia gained momentum with a four-point run to pull ahead 17-14. The Bulldogs continued to roll and closed out the contest with a 25-18 victory in the frame.

Natany Felix Guimaraes led the match with nine digs and Mortensen put up three blocks. Forgach Aguilar led the offense with six kills and Abbey Neff had 12 assists.

UP NEXT

The Warriors wrap up their Nebraska trip on Saturday with a morning matchup against Hastings College. The contest will be played on neutral court at Concordia in Seward. LC State returns home next week to host the Hells Canyon Grand Invitational Aug. 22-23 in the P1FCU Activity Center.
