Wildfire Crisis Camp Taking Applications from High School Juniors

KAMIAH, Idaho: January 11, 2024- The Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest is excited to announce that the application window for the Wildfire Crisis Camp is open to high school juniors in northern Idaho! Students will be given the opportunity to learn about on-the-job field work, career opportunities, and potential benefits to pursuing a career in wildland fire.

“This camp is a window of opportunity [for students] to get a sneak-peek at what a career in wildland fire looks like,” stated Jared Gorham, Wildfire Crisis Camp Founder and Coordinator. Mr. Gorham continued, “It shows initiative on the students’ end that they are determined about pursuing this type of career, and that determination and motivation is highly desired in crew members for any type of wildland fire crew.” The Wildfire Crisis Camp provides an opportunity for students to network with potential employers and gain job-related experience that they can use on their resumes. From the 2023 cohort, all those who applied to either federal or state wildland fire crews were offered a job for the 2024 fire season.

The Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests’ Wildfire Crisis Camp will be a three-day event that will start at the Grangeville Air Center. During the camp, students will have an opportunity to go in the field, where hands-on experience with tools and equipment will take place. There will be a combination of classroom and field work that will include hiking, pile burning, fire line construction, and a variety of other general on-the-job activities that could be expected in a job within the wildland fire industry.

For more information about the camp and how to apply, please scan the QR code on the attached flyer or contact Jared Gorham by email at [email protected] or by phone at 541-561-4707.
