(Idaho State) Idaho drivers usually prepare for winter weather with coats, blankets, and emergency kits. However, AAA reminds drivers that regular car washes are an important part of the equation.
During winter driving, vehicles tend to accumulate mud and grime which can reduce the effectiveness of turn signals, headlights, and even your backup camera. Car washes improve your ability to see and be seen on the road. They can also remove the buildup of deicers and salts from your vehicle’s undercarriage, which may damage your exhaust and braking systems over time.
AAA research has also demonstrated that dirt and grime can reduce the effectiveness of cameras and other sensors in today’s advanced driver assistance systems.
“So many drivers rely on backup cameras as a critical source of information. If that lens is clouded for any reason, a simple errand in a parking lot or even backing out of your garage could lead to a preventable fender bender, or something much worse,” says AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde. “Car washes may not have the greatest cosmetic effect in the winter months, but the safety benefits are worth the investment.”
