(Meridian, ID) The Idaho State Police has recognized Detectives Chris Pohanka and Jamie Wood for their extraordinary courage in preventing a potentially fatal crash on Interstate 84. Their swift and selfless actions on October 16, 2024, saved a life and prevented what could have been a devastating tragedy during heavy traffic conditions.
While driving west on I-84 in Boise, the detectives noticed a gray Toyota Camry driving erratically, drifting across lanes at unpredictable speeds. Detective Wood, as a passenger in Detective Pohanka’s vehicle, observed that the driver was unconscious behind the wheel. Unbeknownst to them at the time, the driver had suffered a medical issue and was entirely incapacitated. The detectives immediately decided to spring into action and prevent a potential disaster.
Recognizing the imminent danger to both the unconscious driver and the many motorists around her, Detective Pohanka maneuvered in front of the Camry and slowed, attempting to bring it to a controlled stop. The Camry suddenly accelerated and collided with the back of the patrol car. Despite the impact, Detective Pohanka maintained control, guiding the vehicle safely to a stop in the median. Detective Wood quickly provided first aid to the female driver, monitoring her vital signs until paramedics arrived. She was transported to St. Alphonsus Medical Center, treated, and later released.
ISP Colonel Bill Gardiner commended the heroic act, “Every day, law enforcement officers face unpredictable and dangerous situations, and more often than not, they downplay their bravery and describe their actions as part of the job. In reality, very few people would be willing—or able—to do what these detectives did. They put themselves in harm’s way, stepping between a life-threatening situation and innocent motorists who had no idea of the danger unfolding around them. Without hesitation, they risked their safety to protect another, and in doing so, they saved a life. That level of courage and selflessness is nothing short of extraordinary. Detectives Pohanka and Wood upheld the highest traditions of the Idaho State Police, and their heroism should not go unrecognized. They are true public servants and, without a doubt, true heroes.”
ISP awarded Detective Pohanka and Detective Wood the prestigious Life Saving Award for their bravery and decisive action in the face of danger. This recognition is a testament to their unwavering dedication to public safety and their heroic actions on Interstate 84.
ISP is proud of the men and women like Detective Pohanka and Detective Wood, who are committed, quick-thinking, and courageous. Actions like these should reassure the public that they are in good hands and protected by troopers willing to go above and beyond for public safety.
