(Hayden, ID) On 1/28/2025 at approximately 11:13 AM, Deputies with the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Prairie Shopping Center in Hayden for a report of an assault with a firearm. Central Dispatch received a call from a reporting party stating a male had threatened a female with a firearm, then fled the scene. Several Deputies, Coeur d’Alene Police Officers, and ISP Troopers responded to the area and were able to locate the victim.
The female victim stated she was in her vehicle when she approached by the suspect, who reportedly brandished a firearm. She then fled in her vehicle, knocking the suspect over. She provided a description of the male suspect, and after an extensive search of the area, deputies located him nearby.
The suspect was identified as Douglas Smith, a 64 year old, transient male of Hayden. Douglas was arrested on his outstanding warrant for failure to register as a sex offender, and is currently in custody at the Kootenai County Jail. An investigation into the allegations is ongoing, and an update will be provided if and when applicable.
